For growing guava tree in pots choosing air layered
or grafted plant would be the best.
I brought an air layered guava plant. The benefits
of air layered plant is that the sapling is already matured, it is an exact
replica of its mother plant and it also starts to yield very early.
Important points:
- The pot size should be minimum 16X16 inches.
- Guava tree in pots should be fertilized well to get a good amount and better size of the fruits. So, soil composition should include more amount of compost and manure.
- You can take potting soil, compost and cow dung manure in the ratio of 2:4:4. No problem if differs. That is 80% of manure and 20% of soil.
- Guava trees need more sunlight. Keep the pot in full sun and the soil should be moist.
- It takes 3 to 4 months to completely grow into a fruit.
- If you take a bigger pot add raw kitchen waste and as well as cow dung manure. By the time the roots reach the bottom the raw waste will be completely decomposed and there will be a good amount of nutrients present at the bottom.
- Water the plant regularly and make sure the soil is well drained.
- On summer mulch the pot with dry leaves or coconut fiber so that the soil will not get dried out and it protects the roots.
Here are some of the pictures of my guava plant.
I have brought this plant on Jan 1st,
2019 as a new year gift to us. It
has two beautiful guavas which is ready to harvest. And they were very tasty.
Once first harvest is done I have re-potted the plant to a
bigger one that is 16x16 grow bag and I have pruned the plant from the top.
Pruning helps to get new shoots. Maximum on each new shoot new flowers will grow. And in the mid of March 2019 it has begun flowering. I used to hand pollinate the flowers (not necessary if you found bees or any pollinators nearby) or pollinate if the flowers are falling without forming a fruit.
After one month of flowering I have seen many small guava
fruits on my tree.
This is after 2 months
This is the first fruit from my plant which is after three
and half months from flowering.
I am so happy to see these fruits on my plant and very much
eager to eat 🤪.
This is the second fruit which is after 4 months of
flowering. And there are almost 20 fruits on this plant.
I have cut the guava and it looks so beautiful.
Mistakes and learning from the first yield:
- There were about 40-50 flowers grown on the plant and even it became fruit of small size. However, half of the fruits were fallen because of over watering and because of more heat. Here the Chennai temperature was more than 45 degrees.
-Later I have moved
the tree under green shade which has 50% shade net and I have reduced the amount
of watering.
- The size of the fruit was very small because I haven’t added more manure and compost in the beginning. As I have mentioned above the manure and soil ratio should be 8:2
Once I have noticed
that the size of the fruit is so small, I have added more kitchen compost and
mixed it well in the pot.
- I have observed that all the fruits size was increasing. The second fruit size was quite good as you can see the above picture.
- There were so many ants which used to stay in the pots. To get rid of that I used to add neem leaves water (add good amount of neem leaves in a full bucket of water and keep it whole day and use the water and refill the same) once in 2 or 3 days.
- I even found mealy bugs but not heavily affected. So, I used to remove it manually and used to spray organic neem oil.
Hope this is useful info, Happy gardening 😊
